Shastee

“ଶାସ୍ତି” ହେଉଛି ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ଲେଖକ କାନ୍ହୁଚରଣ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖନୀୟ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହା ପ୍ରଥମ ଥର ପାଇଁ ୧୯୪୬ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା। ଏହି ପୁସ୍ତକଟି ୧୮୬୬ ମସିହାର ଓଡ଼ିଶା ଦୁର୍ଭିକ୍ଷର ବିନାଶକାରୀ ପୃଷ୍ଠଭୂମି ଉପରେ ଆଧାରିତ, ଏବଂ ଏହାର ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ପରିସ୍ଥିତି ଏବଂ ୧୮୬୬ ରୁ ୧୮୭୦ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଏହି ଅଞ୍ଚଳକୁ ପ୍ରଭାବିତ କରିଥିବା ମହାମାରୀକୁ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରିଆସୁଛି।ସେତେବେଳେର ବିଶାଳ ସାମାଜିକ ଏବଂ ଅର୍ଥନୈତିକ ଅସମାନତାକୁ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରିବା ସହିତ, “ଶାସ୍ତି” ଏକ ରୋମାଣ୍ଟିକ ପ୍ରେମ କାହାଣୀରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ବୁଣୁଛି, ଯାହା ଏପରି ଏକ ଦୁର୍ବିପାକ ସମୟରେ କୃଷକ ଜୀବନର କଠୋର ବାସ୍ତବତାର ଏକ ମର୍ମସ୍ପର୍ଶୀ ବିପରୀତତା ପ୍ରଦାନ କରୁଛି। ଏହା ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଜୀବନକୁ ଖୋଳତାଡ଼ କରେ, ବ୍ୟାପକ ଦୁଃଖ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିବିଶେଷଙ୍କ ଉପରେ ଜାତି ଏବଂ ଧାର୍ମିକ ପରମ୍ପରାର ପ୍ରଭାବକୁ ଉଜ୍ଜ୍ୱଳ କରିଥାଏ।
“Shastee” is a notable Odia novel by the renowned author Kanhucharan Mohanty, first published in 1946. The book is set against the devastating backdrop of the Orissa famine of 1866, and continues to depict its aftermath and the subsequent pestilence that plagued the region in the years between 1866 and 1870.While portraying the immense social and economic inequality of the time, “Shastee” also weaves in a romantic love story, providing a poignant contrast to the harsh realities of peasant life during such a calamitous period. It delves into village life, highlighting the impact of caste and religious traditions on individuals amidst widespread suffering.
