“Sasti” (meaning “Punishment”) by Kanhu Charan Mohanty is a prominent Odia novel set against the devastating backdrop of the Odisha famine of 1866 and its aftermath. The story intricately weaves social and human problems with the harsh realities of the famine and ensuing pestilence.At its core, “Sasti” explores the forbidden love between Sanei, a farmer’s son, and Dhobi, a rich landlord’s daughter, who were childhood playmates.
