“ପ୍ରଥମ ପ୍ରତିଶ୍ରୁତି”ହେଉଛି ଆଶାପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣା ଦେବୀଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ବଙ୍ଗଳା ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହାକୁ ତାଙ୍କର ମହାନ କୃତି ବୋଲି ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଏ। ୧୯୬୪ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ, ଏହା ଏକ ତ୍ରିକୋଣୀୟ ପୁସ୍ତକ ଯେଉଁଥିରେ “ସୁବର୍ଣ୍ଣଲତା” ଏବଂ “ବକୁଳ କଥା” ମଧ୍ୟ ଅନ୍ତର୍ଭୁକ୍ତ।
ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି ୧୯ଶ ଶତାବ୍ଦୀର ଶେଷ ଭାଗରେ ବଙ୍ଗଳାରେ ଅବସ୍ଥିତ ଏକ ଶକ୍ତିଶାଳୀ ନାରୀବାଦୀ କାହାଣୀ, ଏହାର ନାୟକ ସତ୍ୟବତୀଙ୍କ ଜୀବନ ଉପରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ। ମାତ୍ର ଆଠ ବର୍ଷ ବୟସରେ, ସତ୍ୟବତୀଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ସାମାଜିକ ମାନ୍ୟତା ଅନୁଯାୟୀ ବିବାହ କରାଯାଏ। କାହାଣୀଟି ସେ ବାସ କରୁଥିବା ପୁରୁଷପ୍ରଧାନ ବିଶ୍ୱ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ତାଙ୍କର ଜୀବନବ୍ୟାପୀ ସଂଘର୍ଷକୁ ଅନୁସରଣ କରେ, ଯାହା କଠୋର ସାମାଜିକ ପ୍ରଥା, ଲିଙ୍ଗଗତ ପୂର୍ବାଗ୍ରହ ଏବଂ ମହିଳାମାନେ ସମ୍ମୁଖୀନ ହେଉଥିବା ମାନସିକ ଏବଂ ଶାରୀରିକ ନିର୍ଯାତନାକୁ ଚ୍ୟାଲେଞ୍ଜ କରେ।

“Prathama Pratisruti” (The First Promise) is a renowned Bengali novel by Ashapurna Devi, considered her magnum opus. Published in 1964, it is the first book in a trilogy that also includes “Subarnalata” and “Bakul Katha.”
The novel is a powerful feminist narrative set in late 19th-century Bengal, focusing on the life of its protagonist, Satyabati. At just eight years old, Satyabati is married off according to prevailing social norms. The story follows her lifelong struggle against the patriarchal world she inhabits, challenging the strict social conventions, gender prejudices, and mental and physical oppression that women face.
Satyabati is a fiercely independent and outspoken character who, despite her circumstances, refuses to conform to her prescribed fate. Through her journey, the novel critiques a society steeped in superstition and injustice towards women. “Prathama Pratisruti” won the Rabindra Puraskar in 1965 and the Jnanpith Award in 1976, cementing its place as a classic of Bengali literature. The title itself refers to Satyabati’s unfulfilled promise to ensure a better life for her daughter, a promise that ultimately fuels her quest for change.
