Pandoolipi

“Pandoolipi” (Manuscript, 1947) by Sachidananda Routray is considered a landmark collection of poems that ushered in the modern era of Odia poetry. It is significant for introducing new verse forms, including prose verses and verses with interim rhymes, and for moving away from strict metrical similarity of vowels.The poems in “Pandoolipi” are lauded for their innovative quality, freshness, new idiomatic expressions, and a fascinating range of imagery. More than just a collection of poems, “Pandoolipi” served as a defiant declaration of human rights, protesting against a decadent social order. Routray, as a conscious writer, aimed to expose and unmask the forces of reaction and exploitation that often hid behind the guise of religion, revivalism, and eformism.Essentially, “Pandoolipi” marked a pivotal shift in Odia poetry, bringing a new sensibility and a critical social consciousness to the forefront.
