“ମାଟିମାଟାଲ” (ଉର୍ବର ମାଟି), ୧୯୬୪ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ, ପ୍ରଖ୍ୟାତ ଲେଖକ ଗୋପୀନାଥ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଓଡିଆ ସାହିତ୍ୟରେ ଏକ ଐତିହାସିକ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ। ପ୍ରାୟ ୧୦୦୦ ପୃଷ୍ଠାର ଏହି ବିଶାଳ ମହାକାବ୍ୟ ତାଙ୍କୁ ୧୯୭୪ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରତିଷ୍ଠିତ ଜ୍ଞାନପୀଠ ପୁରସ୍କାର ପ୍ରଦାନ କରିଥିଲା, ଯାହା ଏହି ସମ୍ମାନ ପାଇବା ପାଇଁ ଏହା ପ୍ରଥମ ଓଡିଆ ପୁସ୍ତକ ଥିଲା। ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପରବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଯୁଗରେ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଜୀବନର ଏକ ବିସ୍ତୃତ ଏବଂ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ। ଏହା ଦୁଇଟି ଗ୍ରାମ, ଫୁଲଶରା ଏବଂ ପାଟେଲିର ସାମାଜିକ-ରାଜନୈତିକ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଏବଂ ସେଠାରେ ବାସ କରୁଥିବା ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଜୀବନ ଉପରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ। ମୁଖ୍ୟ ଚରିତ୍ର, ରବି, ଜଣେ କଲେଜ ଶିକ୍ଷିତ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତି ଯିଏ ସରକାରୀ ଚାକିରି ପରିତ୍ୟାଗ କରି ନିଜ ଗାଁକୁ ଫେରି ସାମାଜିକ ପୁନଃନିର୍ମାଣରେ ନିଜକୁ ଉତ୍ସର୍ଗ କରନ୍ତି। ସେ ଶୋଷଣ, ଜାତିପ୍ରଥା ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ସାମାଜିକ କୁକର୍ମ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଗ୍ରାମବାସୀଙ୍କୁ ଏକତ୍ରିତ କରିବା ପାଇଁ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରନ୍ତି, ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ସମବାୟ କୃଷି ଏବଂ ଆଧୁନିକ କୃଷି ପଦ୍ଧତି ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବାକୁ ଉତ୍ସାହିତ କରନ୍ତି। ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସରେ ରବି ଏବଂ ଚାବିଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଏକ ସୂକ୍ଷ୍ମ ଏବଂ ମର୍ମସ୍ପର୍ଶୀ ପ୍ରେମ କାହାଣୀ ମଧ୍ୟ ରହିଛି। “ମାଟିମାଟାଲ” ମାନବ ସମ୍ପର୍କର ସମୃଦ୍ଧ ଚିତ୍ରଣ, ଏହାର ଗଭୀର ଆଶାବାଦ, ଏବଂ ଏହାର ସାମୁଦାୟିକ ଭାବନା ଏବଂ ସାଧାରଣ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ସ୍ଥିରତା ପାଳନ ପାଇଁ ପ୍ରଶଂସିତ। ଭାଷା ସରଳ ଏବଂ ସ୍ପନ୍ଦନଶୀଳ, ଗ୍ରାମାଞ୍ଚଳର ଦୈନନ୍ଦିନ ଭାଷଣରୁ ଆକର୍ଷିତ, ଯାହା ଗ୍ରାମାଞ୍ଚଳ ପରିବେଶକୁ ଜୀବନ୍ତ କରିଥାଏ।
“Matimatal” (The Fertile Soil), published in 1964, is a landmark novel in Odia literature by the celebrated author Gopinath Mohanty. This massive, almost 1000-page epic earned him the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1974, making it the first Odia book to receive this honor.
The novel provides a detailed and vivid portrayal of rural life in Odisha in the post-independence era. It focuses on the socio-political transformation of two villages, Phulashara and Pateli, and the lives of the people who inhabit them. The central character, Rabi, is a college-educated man who forsakes a government job to return to his village and dedicate himself to social reconstruction. He works to unite the villagers against exploitation, casteism, and other social evils, encouraging them to adopt cooperative farming and modern agricultural methods. The novel also features a subtle and poignant love story between Rabi and Chabi.
“Matimatal” is lauded for its rich depiction of human relationships, its deep-rooted optimism, and its celebration of community spirit and the resilience of the common people. The language is simple and vibrant, drawing from the everyday speech of the villagers, which brings the rural setting to life.
