“କନିଷ୍କ କନିଷ୍କ” ହେଉଛି ଜଗଦୀଶ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖନୀୟ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହା ପାଇଁ ସେ ୧୯୮୯ ମସିହାରେ ଓଡ଼ିଶା ସାହିତ୍ୟ ଏକାଡେମୀ ପୁରସ୍କାର ପାଇଥିଲେ। ଏହି ଶୀର୍ଷକ, ଯାହାର ଅର୍ଥ “କନିଷ୍କ କନିଷ୍କ”, ଏକ ଖଣ୍ଡୀକରଣ କିମ୍ବା ହୁଏତ ଏକ ଦ୍ୱୈତତାକୁ ଇଙ୍ଗିତ କରେ, ଯେପରି ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ମୁଣ୍ଡହୀନ କନିଷ୍କ ପ୍ରତିମାକୁ ଏହା ଲେଖକଙ୍କ ପୁଅ ପ୍ରତି ଉତ୍ସର୍ଗୀକୃତ ଭାବରେ ସୂଚିତ କରିଥାଏ: “ଯେତେବେଳେ ତୁମେ ବଡ଼ ହେବ, ତୁମେ ପଢ଼ିବ ଏବଂ ମାନବତାର ଭାଗ୍ୟ, ଅସହାୟତା ଏବଂ ଅର୍ଥହୀନତାକୁ ବୁଝିବ। ତା’ପରେ ତୁମେ ନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଭାବରେ ଅନୁଭବ କରିବ ଯେ ଜୀବନ କନିଷ୍କ ପରି ଖଣ୍ଡିତ! ଯଦି କନିଷ୍କ ପ୍ରତିମା ସହିତ ଏକ ମୁଣ୍ଡ ଲାଗି ରହିଥାଏ, ତେବେ କ’ଣ କେହି ଏହାକୁ କନିଷ୍କ ବୋଲି ଡାକିବେ?”ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି ଏକ ପ୍ରାମାଣିକ ଅସ୍ତିତ୍ୱ ପାଇଁ ସାଧାରଣ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିମାନେ ସମ୍ମୁଖୀନ ହେଉଥିବା ନୈତିକ ଦ୍ୱନ୍ଦ୍ୱକୁ ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ସ୍ୱୀକୃତିପ୍ରାପ୍ତ। ଜଗଦୀଶ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଲେଖା ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ବାସ୍ତବ ଜୀବନର ସାମାଜିକ ଏବଂ ରାଜନୈତିକ ପ୍ରସଙ୍ଗର ପୃଷ୍ଠଭୂମି ବିରୁଦ୍ଧରେ, ବିଶେଷକରି ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ, ଅସ୍ତିତ୍ୱବାଦୀ ବିଷୟବସ୍ତୁ, ବିଚ୍ଛିନ୍ନତା ଏବଂ ମାନବ ଅଭିଜ୍ଞତାର ଜଟିଳତାକୁ ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ କରେ। ତାଙ୍କ ଶୈଳୀ ଜୀବନ ଏବଂ ଲୋକଙ୍କର ରୋମାଣ୍ଟିକ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ପାଇଁ ଜଣାଶୁଣା, ଚରିତ୍ରଗୁଡ଼ିକର ଆତ୍ମ-ପ୍ରତିଫଳିତ ଏବଂ ଦାର୍ଶନିକ ଚିନ୍ତାଧାରା ସହିତ ମିଶ୍ରିତ। “କନିଷ୍କ କନିଷ୍କ” ତାଙ୍କର ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କୃତି ଭାବରେ ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଏ, ଯାହା ଲେଖିବାକୁ ତାଙ୍କୁ ପନ୍ଦର ବର୍ଷ ସମୟ ଲାଗିଥିଲା।
“Kaniska Kaniska” is a notable Odia novel by Jagadish Mohanty, for which he received the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989. The title, literally meaning “Kanishka Kanishka,” hints at a fragmentation or perhaps a duality, much like the ancient headless Kanishka statue it alludes to in its dedication to the author’s son: “When you grow up, you will read and understand the fate, helplessness, and the meaningfulness and meaninglessness of humanity. Then you will surely feel that life is fragmented like Kanishka! If a head is attached to the Kanishka statue, will anyone still call it Kanishka?”the novel is recognized for exploring the moral dilemmas faced by ordinary individuals in their quest for an authentic existence. Jagadish Mohanty’s writing often delves into existential themes, alienation, and the complexities of human experience, set against the backdrop of real-life social and political issues, particularly in Odisha. His style is known for its unromanticized portrayal of life and people, combined with self-reflective and philosophical thoughts of the characters. “Kaniska Kaniska” is considered one of his significant works, taking him fifteen years to write.
