“ଯନ୍ତ୍ରାରୂଢ଼” ଯାହାକୁ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ “ଆଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଇଡ୍ ଦି ହ୍ୱିଲ୍” କିମ୍ବା “ଦି ଇଣ୍ଡଷ୍ଟ୍ରୁମେଣ୍ଟେଡ୍” ଭାବରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରାଯାଏ, ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରଶେଖର ରଥଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ପ୍ରସିଦ୍ଧ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ। ୧୯୭୭ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ, ଏହା ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଜଣେ ବୃଦ୍ଧ ମନ୍ଦିର ପୁରୋହିତ ସନାତନ ଦାସଙ୍କ କାହାଣୀ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରେ। ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି ଦୁଇଟି ମୁଖ୍ୟ ଭାଗରେ ବିଭକ୍ତ। ପ୍ରଥମାର୍ଦ୍ଧ ସନାତନଙ୍କ ତାଙ୍କ ଗାଁରେ ଏକାନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ ଉପରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ, ଦାରିଦ୍ର୍ୟର ଗ୍ରହଣ, ତାଙ୍କ ପତ୍ନୀଙ୍କ ନିରନ୍ତର ଅଭିଯୋଗ ଏବଂ ସେ ସମ୍ମୁଖୀନ ହେଉଥିବା ଛୋଟ ଛୋଟ ସାମାଜିକ ଚ୍ୟାଲେଞ୍ଜକୁ ଆଲୋକିତ କରେ। ଏହା ଜାତିଗତ ପଦାନୁକ୍ରମ ଏବଂ ପୁନରାବୃତ୍ତି ରୀତିନୀତି ସହିତ କ୍ଲଷ୍ଟ୍ରୋଫୋବିକ୍ ବ୍ରାହ୍ମଣ ବସତିକୁ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରେ। ଉପନ୍ୟାସର ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟାର୍ଦ୍ଧ ଏକ ଆଧ୍ୟାତ୍ମିକ ମୋଡ଼ ନେଇଥାଏ। ତାଙ୍କ ପତ୍ନୀ ଏବଂ ପୁଅର ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପରେ, ସନାତନ ଦକ୍ଷିଣେଶ୍ୱର, ବାରାଣସୀ, ବୃନ୍ଦାବନ ଏବଂ ଶେଷରେ ପୁରୀ ଭଳି ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ହିନ୍ଦୁ ସ୍ଥାନଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ଏକ ଶାରୀରିକ ତୀର୍ଥଯାତ୍ରା ଆରମ୍ଭ କରନ୍ତି। ଏହି ବାହ୍ୟ ଯାତ୍ରା ଏକ ଆଭ୍ୟନ୍ତରୀଣ ଯାତ୍ରାକୁ ପ୍ରତିଫଳିତ କରେ, ଯାହା ତାଙ୍କୁ ଗଭୀର ରହସ୍ୟମୟ ଅଭିଜ୍ଞତା ଏବଂ ଜୀବନର ଗଭୀର ବୁଝାମଣା ଆଡ଼କୁ ନେଇଯାଏ। “ଯନ୍ତ୍ରାରୂଢ଼” କୁ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ଏକ “ହିନ୍ଦୁ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ” ଭାବରେ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରାଯାଏ କାରଣ ଏହା ଧର୍ମପରାୟଣତା, ଭକ୍ତି, ଆତ୍ମ-ସାକ୍ଷାତ ଏବଂ ଭୌତିକ ଚିନ୍ତାକୁ ଅତିକ୍ରମ କରି ଏକ ଗଭୀର, ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷ ଖୁସିର ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ ଭଳି ବିଷୟବସ୍ତୁର ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ କରିଥାଏ। ଏହା ମାନବ ଅଭିଜ୍ଞତାର ସମ୍ବେଦନଶୀଳ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ଏବଂ ଏକ ସରଳ, ଗରିବ ଜୀବନର କଷ୍ଟ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଆଧ୍ୟାତ୍ମିକ ସନ୍ଧାନରେ ପ୍ରବେଶ ପାଇଁ ପାଳିତ ହୁଏ।
“Jantrarudha,” often translated as “Astride the Wheel” or “The Instrumented,” is a renowned Odia novel by Chandrasekhar Rath. Published in 1977, it tells the story of Sanatan Dase, an aging temple priest in rural Odisha.The novel is divided into two main parts. The first half focuses on Sanatan’s monotonous life in his village, highlighting his acceptance of poverty, his wife’s constant complaints, and the petty social challenges he faces. It depicts the claustrophobic Brahmin settlement with its caste hierarchies and repetitive rituals.
The second half of the novel takes a spiritual turn. After the deaths of his wife and son, Sanatan embarks on a physical pilgrimage to significant Hindu sites like Dakhineswar, Varanasi, Vrindavan, and ultimately Puri. This outward journey mirrors an internal one, leading him towards profound mystical experiences and a deeper understanding of life.”Jantrarudha” is often described as a “Hindu novel” due to its exploration of themes like piety, devotion, self-realization, and the pursuit of a deeper, flawless happiness that transcends materialistic concerns. It is celebrated for its sensitive portrayal of human experience and its delve into the spiritual quest amidst the travails of a simple, impoverished life.
