ଗୋପୀନାଥ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ “ହରିଜନ”, ଯାହା ପ୍ରଥମ ଥର ପାଇଁ ୧୯୪୮ ମସିହାରେ ଓଡ଼ିଆରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା, ଏହା ଏକ ମୌଳିକ ଏବଂ ଶକ୍ତିଶାଳୀ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଯାହା ଏକ ବସ୍ତିରେ ରହୁଥିବା “ମେହେନ୍ତର” ନାମରେ ପରିଚିତ ହାତ ସଫାକାରୀଙ୍କ ସମ୍ପ୍ରଦାୟର ଜୀବନକୁ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଭାବରେ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରେ। ଏହି ପୁସ୍ତକଟି ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଅସ୍ତିତ୍ୱର ନିଷ୍ଠୁର ବାସ୍ତବତା ଉପରେ ଏକ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଏବଂ ଅବିଚଳିତ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିକୋଣ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ, ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଜାତି ଯୋଗୁଁ ସେମାନେ ସମ୍ମୁଖୀନ ହେଉଥିବା ସାମାଜିକ ଅନ୍ୟାୟ ଏବଂ ଶୋଷଣ ଉପରେ ଧ୍ୟାନ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ କରେ।

Gopinath Mohanty’s “Harijan,” first published in Odia in 1948, is a radical and powerful novel that vividly portrays the lives of a community of manual scavengers, known as “mehentars,” living in a slum. The narrative follows her journey from a hopeful, naive girl to someone who is brutally confronted with the inescapable and degrading nature of her “fate.” The novel contrasts the lives of the poor mehentars with the wealthy, upper-caste residents who live nearby, highlighting the hypocrisy and indifference of the privileged. Through this portrayal, Mohanty critiques the caste system and the deep-seated societal attitudes that perpetuate it, showing how poverty and caste are intertwined to create a cycle of misery and dispossession. “Harijan” is considered a significant work of Indian literature for its authentic and empathetic depiction of the marginalized and for its fierce condemnation of social inequality.
