Hajare Chourasi Ra Maa

Hajare Chourasi Ra Maa (The Mother of 1084) is a Bengali novel by renowned author and activist Mahasweta Devi, first published in 1974. The novel is a poignant and powerful exploration of grief, social injustice, and the Naxalite movement in 1970s Bengal.The story centers on Sujata, an upper-middle-class woman whose life is turned upside down when she receives a phone call announcing the death of her youngest son, Brati. She is informed that his body is being held in a morgue, identified only by the number 1084. As Sujata grapples with her immense loss, she realizes how little she truly knew about her son’s life. He was a Naxalite, a revolutionary fighting for the rights of the poor and oppressed, and his death was a result of police brutality.The novel follows Sujata’s journey as she seeks to understand Brati’s ideology and the choices that led to his death. She defies her indifferent family and a society that condemns her son as a terrorist, connecting with his former comrades and his girlfriend, Nandini. Through these encounters, Sujata begins to see the world through Brati’s eyes and confronts the hypocrisy and social apathy of her own privileged class. The book is a moving portrayal of a mother’s transformation from a passive housewife to a woman who finally understands and honors her son’s rebellious spirit.
