“ଦାନପାଣି” ହେଉଛି ସାହିତ୍ୟ ଏକାଡେମୀ ପୁରସ୍କାର ଏବଂ ଜ୍ଞାନପୀଠ ପୁରସ୍କାର ଉଭୟର ପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ପ୍ରଶଂସିତ ଲେଖକ ଗୋପୀନାଥ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ଶାସ୍ତ୍ରୀୟ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ।
ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହାକୁ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ଇଂରାଜୀରେ “ଦି ସର୍ଭାଇଭର” ଭାବରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରାଯାଏ, ଏହା ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ରାଜତ୍ୱ ସମୟରେ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପୂର୍ବ ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ଅବସ୍ଥିତ ଏକ ମର୍ମସ୍ପର୍ଶୀ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ବିଷାଦପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କାହାଣୀ। ଏହା ସାଧାରଣ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଜୀବନକୁ ଖୋଳତାଡ଼ କରେ, ବିଶେଷକରି ଗରିବ, ଆଦିବାସୀ ଏବଂ “ଅସ୍ପୃଶ୍ୟ” ସମ୍ପ୍ରଦାୟର ସଂଘର୍ଷ ଏବଂ ଆକାଂକ୍ଷା ଉପରେ ଧ୍ୟାନ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ କରେ।
ଏହି ମୁଖ୍ୟ ବିଷୟବସ୍ତୁ ଜଣେ ପୁରୁଷ ନାୟକର ମହତ୍ତ୍ୱାକାଂକ୍ଷା ଚାରିପାଖରେ ଘୂରି ବୁଲୁଛି ଯିଏ ସାମାଜିକ ସିଡ଼ି ଚଢ଼ି କ୍ଷମତାର ପଦବୀ ହାସଲ କରିବାକୁ ଚେଷ୍ଟା କରେ, “ସାହେବ” (ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ମାଲିକ) ପରି ହେବାକୁ ଆଶା କରେ। କ୍ୟାରିୟର ଉନ୍ନତି ଏବଂ ଭୌତିକ ଲାଭ ପାଇଁ ସେ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ତାଙ୍କ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିଗତ ଜୀବନ ଏବଂ ପାରିବାରିକ ମୂଲ୍ୟବୋଧକୁ ସାଲିସ କରନ୍ତି।
“ଦାନପାଣି” ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ସଂସ୍କୃତି ଏବଂ ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ସମାଜ ଉପରେ ଉପନିବେଶବାଦୀ ଶାସନ ଏବଂ ଆଧୁନିକତାର ପ୍ରଭାବ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଦ୍ୱନ୍ଦ୍ୱକୁ ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ କରେ। ମହାନ୍ତି ସେ ସମୟରେ ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ସାମାଜିକ ସମସ୍ୟାଗୁଡ଼ିକୁ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଭାବରେ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରିଛନ୍ତି, ଯେପରିକି ଜାତି ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା, ଦାରିଦ୍ର୍ୟ ଏବଂ ଶିକ୍ଷାର ଅଭାବ, ଏବଂ ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ସମୃଦ୍ଧ ଏବଂ ସ୍ପନ୍ଦନଶୀଳ ସଂସ୍କୃତିକୁ ଏହାର ଲୋକଗୀତ, ପର୍ବ ଏବଂ ରୀତିନୀତି ସହିତ ଜୀବନ୍ତ କରିଛନ୍ତି।

“Danapani” is a classic Odia novel written by the acclaimed author Gopinath Mohanty, a recipient of both the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award.
The novel, often translated as “The Survivor” in English, is a poignant and often melancholic tale set in pre-independence rural Odisha during the British Raj. It delves into the lives of common people, particularly focusing on the struggles and aspirations of the poor, tribal, and “untouchable” communities.
The central theme revolves around the ambition of a male protagonist who strives to climb the social ladder and attain a position of power, hoping to become like the “Sahebs” (British masters). In his pursuit of career advancement and material gains, he often compromises his personal life and family values.
