ଫକୀର ମୋହନ ସେନାପତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ “ଛମାଣ ଅଠଗୁଣ୍ଠ”: “ଛମାଣ ଅଠଗୁଣ୍ଠ” (ଅର୍ଥ “ଛଅ ଏକର ଏବଂ ଆଠ ଦଶମିକ”) ପ୍ରଥମ ଆଧୁନିକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଏବଂ ଭାରତୀୟ ସାହିତ୍ୟର ଏକ ମୂଳଦୁଆ କୃତି ଭାବରେ ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଏ। ଫକୀର ମୋହନ ସେନାପତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ, ଏହା 19 ଶତାବ୍ଦୀର ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ଧନୀ ଏବଂ ଶକ୍ତିଶାଳୀ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଗରିବ ଏବଂ ଦୁର୍ବଳ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଶୋଷଣ ଉପରେ ଏକ କଠୋର ସାମାଜିକ ମନ୍ତବ୍ୟ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ। କଥାଟି ମଙ୍ଗରାଜଙ୍କ ଉପରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ, ଜଣେ ଧୂର୍ତ୍ତ ଏବଂ ଲୋଭୀ ଜମିଦାର, ଯିଏ ପ୍ରତାରଣା ଏବଂ ହେରଫେର ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ, ଏକ ସରଳ, ସଚ୍ଚୋଟ ବୁଣାକାର ଦମ୍ପତି, ଭାଗିଆ ଏବଂ ସାରିଆଙ୍କ ମାଲିକାନାରେ ଥିବା ଏକ ଛୋଟ ଜମି (ଛଅ ଏକର ଏବଂ ଆଠ ଦଶମିକ) ହାସଲ କରିବାକୁ ଯୋଜନା କରନ୍ତି। ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ଜୀବନର କଠୋର ବାସ୍ତବତା, ଭୂମି-ରାଜସ୍ୱ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାର ଜଟିଳତା ଏବଂ ସାଧାରଣ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଉପରେ ଲୋଭ ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟାୟର ବିନାଶକାରୀ ପ୍ରଭାବକୁ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଭାବରେ ଚିତ୍ରଣ କରେ। ସେନାପତି ସମାଜ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ନୈତିକ ଅବକ୍ଷୟକୁ ପ୍ରକାଶ କରିବା ଏବଂ ଦଳିତଙ୍କ ଅଧିକାର ପାଇଁ ସମର୍ଥନ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ତୀକ୍ଷ୍ଣ ବୁଦ୍ଧି, ବ୍ୟଙ୍ଗ ଏବଂ ବାସ୍ତବବାଦୀ ଚରିତ୍ର ବ୍ୟବହାର କରନ୍ତି।
“Chhamana Athaguntha” by Fakir Mohan Senapati: “Chhamana Athaguntha” (meaning “Six Acres and Eight Decimals”) is considered the first modern Odia novel and a foundational work of Indian literature. Written by Fakir Mohan Senapati, it offers a scathing social commentary on the exploitation of the poor and vulnerable by the wealthy and powerful in 19th-century Odisha.The story centers on Mangaraj, a cunning and avaricious landlord who, through deceit and manipulation, schemes to acquire a small plot of land (six acres and eight decimals) belonging to a simple, honest weaver couple, Bhagia and Saria. The novel vividly portrays the stark realities of rural life, the intricacies of the land-revenue system, and the devastating impact of greed and injustice on ordinary people. Senapati uses sharp wit, satire, and realistic characters to expose the moral decay within society and advocate for the rights of the downtrodden.
