ଫକୀର ମୋହନ ସେନାପତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ “ଛ ମାଣ ଆଠଗୁଣ୍ଠ”ଏକ ଐତିହାସିକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହାକୁ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ପ୍ରଥମ ଆଧୁନିକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଭାବରେ ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଏ। ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଶାସନାଧୀନ 19 ଶତାବ୍ଦୀର ଗ୍ରାମାଞ୍ଚଳ ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ ଅବସ୍ଥିତ ଏହି କାହାଣୀଟି ଜଣେ ଲୋଭୀ ଏବଂ ଧୂର୍ତ୍ତ ଜମିଦାର ରାମଚନ୍ଦ୍ର ମଙ୍ଗରାଜଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଭୂମିହୀନ କୃଷକଙ୍କ ଶୋଷଣକୁ ପ୍ରକାଶ କରେ।ମଙ୍ଗରାଜ, ଅନୈତିକ ଉପାୟରେ, ଗ୍ରାମବାସୀଙ୍କ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷତା ଏବଂ ହତାଶାକୁ ଶିକାର କରି ଏକ ବିଶାଳ ସମ୍ପତ୍ତି ନିର୍ମାଣ କରନ୍ତି। କେନ୍ଦ୍ରୀୟ କାହାଣୀଟି ଏକ ସରଳ, ଈଶ୍ୱରଭୟୀ ବୁଣାକାର ଦମ୍ପତି, ଭଗିଆ ଏବଂ ସାରିଆଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଏକ ସାଢ଼େ ଛଅ ଏକର ଜମି ଅକ୍ତିଆର କରିବା ପାଇଁ ତାଙ୍କର ପ୍ରତାରଣାପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଯୋଜନା ଚାରିପାଖରେ ଘୂରି ବୁଲୁଛି। ସେ ଋଣ ଏବଂ ଆଇନଗତ କୌଶଳ ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ପରିଚାଳନା କରନ୍ତି, ଶେଷରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ବିତାଡ଼ିତ କରନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ସେମାନଙ୍କର ବିନାଶର କାରଣ ହୁଅନ୍ତି।ଉପନିବେଶିକ ସମୟରେ ଶୋଷଣକାରୀ ଜମିଦାର ଏବଂ ମହାଜନଙ୍କ ଉଦୀୟମାନ ଶ୍ରେଣୀର ଏକ ଶକ୍ତିଶାଳୀ ସମାଲୋଚନା। ଏହା ସେହି ଯୁଗରେ ମହିଳାମାନଙ୍କ ଦୁର୍ଦ୍ଦଶା ଉପରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ଆଲୋକପାତ କରେ ଏବଂ ଉପନିବେଶିକ ମୂଲ୍ୟବୋଧ ଏବଂ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତିତ ସାମାଜିକ ଦୃଶ୍ୟପଟ ଉପରେ ଏକ ବ୍ୟଙ୍ଗାତ୍ମକ ଦୃଷ୍ଟିକୋଣ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ। ମଙ୍ଗରାଜ ପ୍ରାରମ୍ଭରେ ତାଙ୍କ ଦୁଷ୍ଟତା ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ ସଫଳ ହେଉଥିବା ବେଳେ, କାହାଣୀ ଶେଷରେ କର୍ମ ତାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ମିଶି ତାଙ୍କ ପତନକୁ ନେଇଯାଏ। “ଛ ମାନ ଆଠଗୁଣ୍ଠ” ସାମାଜିକ ପରିସ୍ଥିତିର ବାସ୍ତବବାଦୀ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ଏବଂ ଏହାର ନୈତିକ ଏବଂ ଆଧ୍ୟାତ୍ମିକ ଅନ୍ତର୍ଦୃଷ୍ଟି ପାଇଁ ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ କୃତି।
“Chha Maan Aathagunth” (Six Acres and a Half) by Fakir Mohan Senapati is a landmark Odia novel, often considered the first modern Odia novel. Set in 19th-century rural Odisha under British rule, the story exposes the exploitation of landless peasants by a greedy and cunning landlord, Ramachandra Mangaraj.
Mangaraj, through unscrupulous means, builds a vast estate by preying on the innocence and desperation of villagers. The central plot revolves around his deceitful scheme to acquire a fertile six-and-a-half-acre piece of land from a simple, God-fearing weaver couple, Bhagia and Saria. He manipulates them through loans and legal trickery, ultimately dispossessing them and leading to their ruin.The novel is a powerful critique of the emerging class of exploitative landlords and money-lenders during colonial times. It also sheds light on the plight of women in that era and offers a satiric look at colonial values and the changing social landscape. While Mangaraj initially prospers through his wickedness, the narrative ultimately sees karma catching up with him, leading to his downfall. “Chha Maan Aathagunth” is a significant work for its realistic portrayal of social conditions and its moral and spiritual insights.
