“ଅଧେଖା ହାତ”ହେଉଛି କାନୁ ଚରଣ ମହାନ୍ତିଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖନୀୟ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ, ଯାହା ପ୍ରଥମେ ୧୯୩୯ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା। ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି ଛବିଙ୍କ ମର୍ମସ୍ପର୍ଶୀ କାହାଣୀ ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରେ, ଯିଏ ତାଙ୍କ ମାଆଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଏକ ଗାଁରେ ରହୁଥିବା ଜଣେ ଯୁବତୀ, ସୁନ୍ଦରୀ ଏବଂ ଉତ୍ସାହୀ ଝିଅ। ତାଙ୍କ ଅସୁସ୍ଥ ପିତା, କଟକର ଜଣେ ସ୍କୁଲ ଶିକ୍ଷକ, ସେମାନଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତିପୋଷଣ ପାଇଁ ସଂଘର୍ଷ କରନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କ ଝିଅ ପାଇଁ ଏକ ଭଲ ବର ଖୋଜିବାକୁ ଆଶା କରନ୍ତି। କିନ୍ତୁ, ତାଙ୍କର ହଠାତ୍ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ଛବି ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କ ମାଆଙ୍କୁ ଅସୁରକ୍ଷିତ କରିଦିଏ।ଗୁପଚୁପ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରାୟତଃ ନିଷ୍ଠୁର ଗ୍ରାମରେ, ଛବିଙ୍କୁ ବାସନ୍ଦ କରାଯାଏ ଏବଂ ଗ୍ରାମବାସୀମାନେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଏକ ଗ୍ରାମ ମୂର୍ଖ ସହିତ ବିବାହ ଦେବାକୁ ଷଡ଼ଯନ୍ତ୍ର କରନ୍ତି, ଯାହା ତାଙ୍କୁ ତାଙ୍କର ସୌନ୍ଦର୍ଯ୍ୟ ଏବଂ ଦାରିଦ୍ର୍ୟ ପାଇଁ ଦଣ୍ଡିତ କରେ। ନିଷ୍ଠୁର ଗ୍ରାମମୁଖୀ, ଯାହାଙ୍କ ପୁଅ ଥରେ ଛବିଙ୍କୁ ବିବାହ କରିବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଥିଲା କିନ୍ତୁ ତାଙ୍କ ଦାରିଦ୍ର୍ୟ ଦ୍ୱାରା ବାଧାପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ହୋଇଥିଲା, ତାଙ୍କୁ ଏହି ଅବାଞ୍ଛିତ ବିବାହକୁ ଗ୍ରହଣ କରିବାକୁ ବ୍ଲାକମେଲ୍ କରନ୍ତି।କାହାଣୀଟି ଏକ ମୋଡ଼ ନେଇଥାଏ ଯେତେବେଳେ ଛବି ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କ ମାଆ ବିବାହ ଖର୍ଚ୍ଚ ପାଇଁ କଟକ ଯାତ୍ରା କରନ୍ତି। ସେଠାରେ, ଛବିଙ୍କର ଏକ ସୁଯୋଗର ସହିତ ସାକ୍ଷାତ ହୁଏ ଯାହାକୁ ତାଙ୍କ ପିତା ପ୍ରଥମେ ତାଙ୍କ ସମ୍ଭାବ୍ୟ ବର ଭାବରେ ବାଛିଥିଲେ, ଆଶା ଏବଂ ଆକାଂକ୍ଷା ଜାଗ୍ରତ କରେ। କିନ୍ତୁ, ସେ ଶୀଘ୍ର ଜାଣିପାରନ୍ତି ଯେ ସେ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ବିବାହିତ ହୋଇସାରିଛନ୍ତି।ଗାଁରେ ଫେରି, ଯେତେବେଳେ ଅନାବଶ୍ୟକ ବିବାହ ପାଇଁ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତି ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୁଏ, ଛବିଙ୍କ ଭୟଙ୍କର ମାଆ ଆଶ୍ଚର୍ଯ୍ୟଜନକ ଭାବରେ ଗାଁ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ସହ ମୁକାବିଲା କରିବା ଏବଂ ବିବାହ ବାତିଲ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ସାହସ ପାଆନ୍ତି। ସେ ଗ୍ରାମ ମୁଖ୍ୟଙ୍କ ପୁଅରେ ଏକ ଅପ୍ରତ୍ୟାଶିତ ସହଯୋଗୀ ପାଆନ୍ତି, ଯିଏ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଛବି ପାଇଁ ଏକ ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ବର ଖୋଜିବାରେ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରନ୍ତି, ଯିଏ ତାଙ୍କ ପିତା ଥରେ ପସନ୍ଦ କରିଥିବା ପୁରୁଷର ଜଣେ ସମ୍ପର୍କୀୟ ବୋଲି ଜଣାପଡ଼େ।”ଅଧେଖା ହଟା” ଛବିଙ୍କ କଣ୍ଠସ୍ୱର ମାଧ୍ୟମରେ ଉପସ୍ଥାପିତ ହୋଇଛି ଏବଂ ସ୍ୱାଧୀନତା ପୂର୍ବ ଭାରତର ଏକ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଗ୍ରାମର ଜୀବନକୁ ସ୍ପଷ୍ଟ ଭାବରେ ଉଜାଗର କରିଛି। ଏହା ନୀଚତା, ନିଷ୍ଠୁରତା ଏବଂ ମାନବୀୟ ଦାନଶୀଳତାର ଛୋଟ ବିଜୟର ବିଷୟବସ୍ତୁକୁ ଉଜାଗର କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଏକ ଆଦର୍ଶ ଗ୍ରାମୀଣ ପୃଷ୍ଠଭୂମି ବ୍ୟବହାର କରେ। ଉପନ୍ୟାସଟି କର୍ତ୍ତବ୍ୟ ଏବଂ ଇଚ୍ଛା ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଦ୍ୱନ୍ଦ୍ୱକୁ ସୂକ୍ଷ୍ମ ଭାବରେ ଅନୁସନ୍ଧାନ କରେ, ସାମାଜିକ ରୀତିକୁ ଦମନ କରେ, ଏବଂ ବ୍ୟକ୍ତିତ୍ୱର ଦାବି, ସାହସିକତାର ସହିତ ଇଚ୍ଛାର ଜଟିଳତାକୁ ସ୍ୱୀକାର କରେ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରକାଶ କରେ, ପ୍ରାୟ ଆଠ ଦଶନ୍ଧି ପୂର୍ବେ ଲିଖିତ ଏକ ଭାରତୀୟ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ପାଇଁ ଏକ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖନୀୟ ସାହସିକ ଆଭିମୁଖ୍ୟ। କାନୁ ଚରଣ ମହାନ୍ତି ମହିଳାଙ୍କ ଦୁର୍ଦ୍ଦଶା ଏବଂ ସାମାଜିକ ଓ ଅର୍ଥନୈତିକ ଶୋଷଣକୁ ଆଲୋକପାତ କରୁଥିବା ତାଙ୍କର କୃତି ପାଇଁ ଜଣାଶୁଣା ଥିଲେ।
“Adhekha Hata” (meaning “The Unseen Hand”) is a notable Odia novel by Kanhu Charan Mohanty, first published in 1939. The novel tells the poignant story of Chhabi, a young, beautiful, and vivacious girl living in a village with her mother. Her ailing father, a school teacher in Cuttack, struggles to provide for them and hopes to find a good groom for his daughter. However, his sudden death leaves Chhabi and her mother vulnerable.
In the gossip-ridden and often cruel village, Chhabi faces ostracization and is targeted by villagers who conspire to marry her off to a village idiot, seemingly punishing her for her beauty and poverty. The ruthless village chief, whose son once desired to marry Chhabi but was prevented by her poverty, blackmails her into accepting this undesirable match.
The narrative takes a turn when Chhabi and her mother travel to Cuttack to sell their land for the wedding expenses. There, Chhabi has a chance encounter with the man her father had originally chosen as her prospective groom, sparking hope and longing. However, she soon discovers he is already betrothed.
Back in the village, as preparations for the unwanted wedding begin, Chhabi’s timid mother surprisingly finds the courage to confront the villagers and cancel the marriage. She finds an unexpected ally in the village chief’s son, who helps her find a suitable groom for Chhabi, who turns out to be a cousin of the man her father had once favored.”Adhekha Hata” is presented through the voice of Chhabi and vividly evokes life in an Odia village in pre-independence India. It uses an idyllic rural backdrop to highlight themes of meanness, cruelty, and the small triumphs of human generosity. The novel subtly explores conflicts between duty and desire, stifling societal conventions, and the assertion of individuality, bravely acknowledging and expressing the complexities of desire, a remarkably bold approach for an Indian novel written nearly eight decades ago. Kanhu Charan Mohanty was known for his works that highlighted the plight of women and social and economic exploitation.
