ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ପ୍ରସାଦ ଦାସଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଲିଖିତ “ଦେଶ କାଳ ପତ୍ର” ଓଡ଼ିଆ ସାହିତ୍ୟର ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଐତିହାସିକ ଉପନ୍ୟାସ। ଏହା ଊନବିଂଶ ଶତାବ୍ଦୀର ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟାର୍ଦ୍ଧରେ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଏକ କାଳ୍ପନିକ କିନ୍ତୁ ବିସ୍ତୃତ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ, ଯାହା ଉପନିବେଶବାଦୀ ଶାସନର ପ୍ରଭାବରେ ଏକ ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ସମାଜର ଗଭୀର ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଉପରେ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରିତ।
ଏହି ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଏହି ସମୟ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ରାଜନୈତିକ, ସାମାଜିକ, ସାଂସ୍କୃତିକ ଏବଂ ସାହିତ୍ୟିକ ଦୃଶ୍ୟପଟର ଏକ ସମୃଦ୍ଧ ଟେପେଷ୍ଟ୍ରି ପ୍ରଦାନ କରେ। ଏହା ଏକ “ବିକଳ୍ପ କାହାଣୀ” ଉପସ୍ଥାପନ କରିବାର ପ୍ରୟାସ ପାଇଁ ବିଶେଷ ଭାବରେ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖନୀୟ ଯେଉଁଠାରେ ଉପନିବେଶିତ ଲୋକମାନେ କେବଳ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନର ନିଷ୍କ୍ରିୟ ପ୍ରାପ୍ତକର୍ତ୍ତା ନୁହଁନ୍ତି ବରଂ ସକ୍ରିୟ ଭାବରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କର ନିଜସ୍ୱ ଭାଗ୍ୟ ଗଠନ କରୁଥିବା ଭାବରେ ଚିତ୍ରିତ ହୁଅନ୍ତି।ଏହି ପୁସ୍ତକଟି ଏହାର ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱ ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟାପକ ଭାବରେ ସ୍ୱୀକୃତି ପାଇଛି, ଜାତୀୟ ପୁସ୍ତକ ଟ୍ରଷ୍ଟର ଆଦାନ ପ୍ରଦାନ ଯୋଜନା ଦ୍ୱାରା ସମସ୍ତ ଭାରତୀୟ ଭାଷାରେ ଅନୁବାଦ ପାଇଁ ମନୋନୀତ ହୋଇଛି, ଏବଂ ହିନ୍ଦୀ, ବଙ୍ଗଳା ଏବଂ ଇଂରାଜୀରେ ଅନୁବାଦ କରାଯାଇଛି (“ଏ ଟାଇମ୍ ଏଲ୍ସୱେୟାର” ଶୀର୍ଷକ ଅଧୀନରେ)। ଉପନ୍ୟାସ ଉପରେ ଆଧାରିତ ଏକ ଚଳଚ୍ଚିତ୍ର ରୂପାନ୍ତର ପାଇଁ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୋଜନା ରହିଛି।
“Desha Kala Patra” by Jagannath Prasad Das is a significant historical novel in Odia literature. It offers a fictional yet panoramic portrayal of Odisha in the second half of the 19th century, focusing on the profound transformation of a traditional society under the impact of colonial rule.The novel provides a rich tapestry of the political, social, cultural, and literary landscape of Odisha during this period. It is particularly notable for attempting to present an “alternate narrative” where the colonized are not merely passive recipients of change but are actively depicted as shaping their own destinies.The book has been widely recognized for its importance, selected for translation into all Indian languages by the National Book Trust’s Aadaan Pradaaan scheme, and has been translated into Hindi, Bengali, and English (under the title “A Time Elsewhere”). There are also plans for a film adaptation based on the novel.
